Hutchison moves on mobile Skype

We should be able to soon make low-cost, or even free, voice over internet protocol calls from mobile phones.

IW Distribution has been working on a system that will let users of many Nokia and Sony Ericsson handsets make calls over the Skype VoIP network. Other big mobile telecommunications players are moving to make mobile VoIP even more accessible.

IDC: 33% of providers offered VoIP in 2005

IDC shows that 33% of internet providers in Brazil offered voice over IP (VoIP) and 17% of providers offered video on demand in 2005, Fabio Costa of IDC told a press conference.

BT to invest in global VoIP

British telco BT plans to invest $21m in a global VoIP platform, about half of which will go towards developing the platform for the Asia Pacific region.

Asia VoIP market to grow by 1 bln usd per year 2005-2009

The market for Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) services in Asia, including Japan, will grow by one bln usd per year between 2005 and 2009, topping 10 bln usd in 2009, said financial services firm Mergent Online.

Smartphone usage in Asia is expected to take off in the third generation (3G) mobile communications era and Chinese mobile phone vendors are preparing for this new demand, Mergent said.

TeliaSonera to trial wireless VoIP

Scandinavian telco TeliaSonera says it is to become the first operator in Europe to trial wireless VoIP telephony via W-LAN, when it launches trails of the service for enterprise customers in Finland, Denmark and Sweden.

Microsoft free internet voice service challenges Vodafone

MICROSOFT has developed a Skype-style free internet voice service for mobile phones that City analysts believe could wipe billions off the market value of operators such as Vodafone.

The service is included in a mobile version of Microsoft Office Communicator due to be released this year. It will take the form of a voice-over internet protocol (VoIP) application that allows Office users to make free voice calls over wi-fi enabled phones running Windows Mobile software. It uses the internet as a virtual phone network as well as accessing e-mail, PowerPoint and other Office applications.

VoIP business to top $3 billion by 2010

The business VoIP market will hit $3.3 billion in service revenue by 2010, according to a Yankee Group report that was released Tuesday.

The market research firm said the lion’s share of the anticipated revenue growth will stem from hosted VoIP in which enterprises find appealing the migration from legacy systems to managed IP solutions without the incurrence of capital expenditures. Hosted VoIP saves on equipment and infrastructure upgrades as well as on management contracts, Yankee Group explained.

EarthLink offers new VoIP service

Broadband provider EarthLink has begun selling a new Internet phone service that’s designed to be easy to use and require no additional hardware.

The company has partnered with broadband access wholesaler Covad Communications to offer the voice over Internet Protocol, or VoIP, service in Dallas, Seattle and the San Francisco-San Jose area starting this week. EarthLink is bundling the new service with DSL (digital subscriber line) broadband access. More cities in Covad’s territory will offer the service later this year; EarthLink would not specify which.

Global VoIP Subscribers to Top 55 Million in 2009

The global market for consumer VoIP services has arrived, with total VoIP subscribers worldwide at 16 million in 2005 and projected to grow to over 55 million in 2009, reports In-Stat. But despite an impressive 62% year-over-year subscriber growth rate in 2005, few consumers have ever heard of the term “VoIP”, the high-tech market research firm says. This indicates providers have to continue to educate the public, and that there is considerable room for market growth.

Branded VoIP Takes Lead in Europe and North America

A study conducted by Sandvine Incorporated in November and December 2005 shows that broadband service provider-branded VoIP rollouts were extremely successful in 2005 and have taken the lead in terms of share of VoIP minutes.

The new study indicates that North American service provider-branded VoIP represents 53% of all VoIP minutes on broadband networks. Vonage, with 21.7% share of North American minutes and Skype, with a 14.4% share were the two leading third-party providers. All other third-party VoIP providers captured the remaining 10.9% share of minutes.
